Do you have your one thing? The one thing that is you, the one thing that defines who you are and what you stand for? I have been driving by Notre Dame for the past few weeks and noticed this banner hanging on the side of a building. The banner was for the late Rev. Theodore Hesburgh who passed away on February 26, 2015. He served as the president of the University of Notre Dame for 35 years.
It was quite a big deal when he passed as a lot of people from around the country came to the funeral. I really didn’t know all the details of what he accomplished. So after passing the banner for the 6th time, I decided to go online and read up on father Hesburgh. All I can say is WOW, he was a man with a mission and accomplished a lot. He grew up in Syracuse, New York and had his one thing from the beginning.
His One Thing was – “He had wished to become a priest since early childhood.”
Now his one thing was his core, it was his foundation that allowed him to accomplish many things and really change the world we know today. It seemed like everything he did, he had clarity around the WHY. His path was clear, starting with seminary, growing Notre Dame as president for 35 years, being on many Civil Rights and Presidential commissions, he had a focus and kept his WHY through all his accomplishments. He was the recipient of over 150 honorary degrees, the most ever awarded to one person.
So when we look back at our life, can you identify a core purpose and a core to you? If you’re like me, your core can get away from you at times because life is a series of continual adjustments. If you know your WHY and you know what you stand for, the adjustments are a little bit easier. I know for me, I had to stop trying to work things out before their times have come. I had to accept the limitations of a day, and accept what I could accomplish today.
